IrisVision Wants To Be More Than An Assistive Device For The Visually Impaired
It Wants To Diagnose And Treat Patients Too!
When you’re visually impaired, you get excited about two things: breakthroughs in science that could
lead to a treatment, and technology that can improve or enhance your vision until that breakthrough comes. As someone who lives with retinitis pigmentosa (a retinal degeneration where the photoreceptors gradually stop functioning), I know first-hand how useful these devices can be.
IrisVision understands this and is striving to be the leader in this space. The Pleasanton, California-based startup developed a software to help people with low vision see more clearly, and partnered with Samsung to create a VR headset. The product is designed to help users overcome several low vision conditions, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, Stargardt disease and glaucoma. Features include image contrasting, luminosity, a bioptic mode to magnify a certain portion of the screen, digital lenses and a special mode to align the field of view.
“Users just need to press one button to get the device fired up,” said IrisVision CEO Ammad Khan, in an interview. “The system can then be accessed by simple touches and swipes or voice command.”
Training sessions with IrisVision representatives are offered to every customer in order to go through the installation process and various menu options (most of the reps are visually impaired themselves).
