Technology has revolutionized households in the last 10 years, from the proliferation of smartphones and voice assistants to the introduction of smart appliances. As more and more people discover the convenience of this technology, it’s likely that smart devices are going to become fixtures within homes.

So what’s the next revolution on its way to every “smart” home? Below, 12 experts from Forbes Technology Council detail the devices and technology that may become a regular feature in homes within the next decade.

1. AI-Powered Sensors

AI-powered sensors in smart appliances and devices that are able to respond to voice and gesture commands—even intelligently process image and video recordings—will be in every smart home. Such capabilities will automatically be able to operate home appliances, open the curtains, order pizzas, automatically replenish standard groceries when supplies are low and more. – Oliver Tan, ViSenze

2. Smart Locks

Ten years from now, physical keys will be a thing of the past. Any type of entrance— from a regular front door to a driveway gate, a garage or an elevator—will automatically know if I have access to it. If I do, it will just magically open. 3. Advanced Presence Detection

With the proliferation of mesh wireless networks, it becomes easy to use the ambient signals to detect motion in the home without dedicated motion sensors. This can be used to better control energy consumption by adjusting lighting and environment based on where people are in the home. 4. Voice-Powered Everything

Human beings are wired for voice-powered digital experiences, and a whole generation of users is growing up exposed to voice user interfaces from birth. As these children who view technology like Alexa as “a part of the family” mature, it’s hard to envision a future where voice is not the primary human-to-machine interface for most digital interactions inside the home. – William Francis, ENO8

5. Smart Surfaces

The next step beyond OLED televisions is merging display and input devices into every surface in a home, including windows, counters and walls. We already monitor various aspects of our health through wrist-worn devices like heart monitors and single-lead EKGs. Disrupting the old is cool. More innovation is coming with basic home features. I adopted home automation early and see the most advancements in lighting. I never hit a light switch. This will become the norm. With built-in intelligence that monitors motion (available today) and preferences (color, brightness, etc.), light switches will go away. In the last 10 years, we have seen a lot of smart tech demos. 10. Smart Textiles

Textiles have provided a fundamental functionality from the very beginning, and that has not changed significantly over the years, centuries and millennia. However, embedding technology into textiles to provide new experiences is the next big opportunity. There are some examples of it in sports/fitness, but it has not grown much. I think 3D printers of personalized supplements might be the next trend to take over smart homes in the next 10 years. The future of energy will be based on renewable sources like solar and wind, and smart home technology will power these energy systems.
