From Classroom to Doctorate: A Low Vision Success Story

An Assistive Technology Success Story for Visually Impaired Students
At New England Low Vision and Blindness, we believe that assistive technology isn’t just about access—it’s about possibility. Few stories better illustrate an assistive technology success story for visually impaired students than Jack M.’s remarkable path from a public school classroom to a doctoral program in Clinical Psychology.
From an early age, Jack approached life with focus, curiosity, and determination. As a student with a visual impairment, he faced barriers—but he never let them define him. With the right tools and the right guidance, Jack not only kept pace with his peers—he soared.
Early Foundations: Empowering Education Through Assistive Technology
Jack’s partnership with New England Low Vision and Blindness began during his K–12 years, where he worked closely with Senior Assistive Technology Specialist Michelle Perkins. Together, they explored and mastered the tools that would shape his academic journey:
These tools gave Jack more than academic access—they gave him independence, confidence, and the means to unlock his full potential.
“From the start, Jack showed a deep curiosity and drive to master the tools that would help him thrive. Watching him grow from a dedicated student into a compassionate professional has been incredibly rewarding.”
— Michelle Perkins, Senior Assistive Technology Specialist
A Clear Vision for the Future
With expert training and ongoing support, Jack navigated high school and college with success. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Clark University and quickly found his calling in mental health care. Working in psychiatric and substance use rehabilitation roles, Jack applied his lived experience and clinical knowledge to support others—many from underserved communities.
“Assistive technology allowed me to excel in school and gave me the tools to pursue my dream of helping others.”
— Jack M.
Today, Jack lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where he is pursuing a doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Spalding University. His mission is deeply personal: to help individuals from historically marginalized backgrounds receive the mental health care they need and deserve.
