For his Eagle Scout project, Jack Haynie decided to install a Braille trail throughout the Manchester-Essex Woods (Massachusetts). He was inspired after his former Scout Leader, Fred Rossi, attended a presentation by Trevor Thomas, the first blind person to complete a solo hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2008.

Haynie is a founding member of Boy Scout Troop 3's Blind Ambassadors program, in which the Scouts team up with hikers and backpackers from the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown to make visually impaired hikers self-reliant when on a trail. The new Braille Trail stretches in the woods north of Route 128 between exits 15 and 16.
